ARIZONA REPUBLIC INTERVIEWS RICH GIORDANO

UFO believer exposes fakes, faces resistance from locals

To most of us, they're easily explained as planes, plastic bags, birds or balloons.

To a select few, those lights, shadows and unidentified objects they see flying or lingering in the desert sky are proof that earthlings are not alone.

Rich Giordano filmed such an event on Val Vista Drive in Mesa in late April, and claims it was a fleet of ships performing exercises in the northern sky.

But before you write Giordano off as another alien-obsessed crackpot, there's one thing you should know: Giordano wants someone to prove him wrong.

The Chandler resident regularly offers $100 to anyone who can disprove some of the videos on his site, that is, those he hasn't already debunked himself.

The shift in Giordano's status from disciple to debunker is creating something of a rift in the area's rich UFO-sighting community.

Though the group is easily given to conspiracy theories, Jeff Woolwine, one of Giordano's favorite targets, said the root of Giordano's debunking campaign is nothing more than professional jealousy.

"If I'm faking this stuff, if it's balloons, then why is everyone seeing the same (stuff) in different parts of the country?" said Woolwine, who believes the drawings on South Mountain's rocks have the power to draw out spirits. "I don't care what Giordano says. He's just upset that I filmed them closer."

Giordano, who hosts a UFO-themed radio show on his Web site, www.cnufos.com, has a ready explanation for this, as he does with most of the unexplained and unidentified objects that are sent to him from awestruck residents around the world.

"I've learned that there aren't as many UFOs as people think. I've debunked most of my own ideas," said Giordano, a 39-year-old native New Yorker who's lived in the Valley since 1979. "I want to believe, but I feel like, with all the stuff I have on video, it's still not good enough for me. Most people just don't know any better, or they're just making stuff up."

Giordano said that was a tough lesson for him to learn when he first entered the area's active sky-watching community in 2004.

But his fascination with unidentified objects circling in the night sky goes back much further.

Giordano was taking out the trash with his dad in the 1970s at their home in New York when his father saw an odd-looking red light in the sky and alerted his neighbors. No more than 5 years old at the time, Giordano said he was hooked on the belief that something or someone else is out there, but the thought didn't creep back into his mind until he was walking his wife's dog in April 2004 and saw what he thought was a moving star.

"I thought it was a satellite and then I went back out at 3:30 in the morning and saw the exact same thing," Giordano said.

Within months his Web site was up, but during the next 18 months, Giordano's tone on the site would change from that of an ardent believer to an increasingly skeptical detractor.

Giordano said there are tricks that help explain many of the most popular UFO videos that have proliferated on sites such as YouTube and LiveVideo.com, the most common of which are launching balloons and recording them as they disappear, giving the appearance of a far-off object ascending to the heavens. UFO hunters can also adjust the lighting, zoom and camera angle to make a large object, such as a plane, look like it's a tiny, shiny speck zooming around the sky, he said.

"The thing about the UFO community is, it's such a hard thing to believe that when someone comes along they think I'm trying to ruin it for them. I'm not. I'm trying to keep 'ufology' in tact," Giordano said. "But I think 95 percent of this stuff is fake, 4 percent is unexplained and 1 percent is real, and that even goes for my own stuff."

Giordano has plenty of motivation to set himself apart from the rabble of UFO sleuths in the state: the more he debunks their stories, Giordano sets himself up as a voice that even the most strident skeptics can trust. That's a handy stance when it comes to driving traffic to his Web site and enhancing efforts to increase exposure for his Web-cast radio show in the hopes of getting an over-the-air gig someday.

Giordano admits the appeal of positioning himself as the voice of reason amidst a sea of screwballs, but that doesn't remove the stigma that accompanies his role.

"It's hard for me at work, too. I kept this a secret at my new job. I don't bring it up, ever. I did at the beginning, when I first started the site. I was working as loan officer at the time and when I started getting into this, people there started to treat me differently. They treated my like a freak," said Giordano, who now works as a manager at a Scottsdale glass-replacement company. "My job is normal, my wife is normal, everything in my life is normal, except for this."

Lenny - People believe in God too.

(Ben (LEDZEPLIN), May 25, 2007 10:44AM)

For me to believe 100% I would have to see one in person. Which I have not. I'm like 70% - 30%.

But the information is out there that suggests our Government has gone to extremes to hide information from us.

Isn't the Universe itself enough (scientific) proof to believe that we are far from the most intelligent life-form in it?

(Ben (LEDZEPLIN), May 25, 2007 10:42AM)

Shelly -

I never said I don't believe there is life on other planets. I do. However, any life on another planet would be light years away. Tell me the last time NASA sent someone to another star? I must have been asleep that day. Yes, UFO means Unidentified Flying Object. Or at least it used to. Nowadays, ask anyone if they 'believe' in UFO's and they are talking about spaceships from other worlds, not things seen in the sky that are as yet unidentified. And finally, you have hit the nail on the head: People BELIEVE in UFO's (alien spaceships). They have to believe because there is no factual eveidence to support their existence. People BELIEVE in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. When was the last time anyone asked you if you believe in gravity or television or oatmeal cookies? You don't have to have a discussion on the belief in these subjects because the facts and evidence are there for all to see. Not so with your 'Unidentifed" Flying Objects.(Lenny6024, May 25, 2007 10:41AM)

ha ha, glad I wasn't the only one who caught those.(michelle402, May 25, 2007 10:40AM)

hocher7642, you shouldn't pick quotes that are more intelligent and lucent than you are.

"We can't be the planet with life."cindy5739

Oh, I'm pretty sure we are the planet with life.

"Lenny - Open your mind a little & check out what the French Government has reviled."Ben (LEDZEPLIN)

The French Gov't reviles everything that isn't French.(Larry7970, May 25, 2007 10:38AM)

So, I checked out the web site, and this is just an example of what I read:

CHEMTRAILS AND THEIR MAKERS - POSTED 01-24-06 - (3.97mbs 47sec) - ORIGINALLY TAPED 01-06
Chemtrails Still going strong and no rain for 92 days and none in sight. Although there were some predictions for rain the chemtrails came strong and wiped that chance out every time. At least that's what I think. Here are a few trails and the planes laying them out.

No rain in sight after 92 days? Hello? This is Phoenix, Arizona .. where it only rains on average about 5 days/year. Someone's got a touch of heat stroke and needs to get out of the sun. How long have you been in Arizona? Go back to New York!

Sorry, but anyone who thinks aircraft contrails are preventing precipitation knows nothing about meteorology. If anything, they have been proven to CAUSE rain.

Looking at just a few of the videos posted as "real UFOs", I know that with a little research (star charts, satellite and space junk charts, and unfortunately, classified project flight schedules) I could debunk all the videos I happened to scan on that web site.

Having been in the USAF before the stealth went public, I saw plenty that could be considered a "UFO", but wasn't.

If this much energy were spent on looking for a cure for cancer and AIDS, they would be as curable as the common athlete’s foot.

UFOs exist, but only until they’re identified.
(Robert4617, May 25, 2007 10:33AM)

I believe they exist. Most people would not want to admit they have seen them, etc. I think our government knows more than it is telling us, or ever will.(Pat3903, May 25, 2007 10:32AM)

What have they revealed? That they have a radar anomoly? Somebody saw something they don't know what it is? What? Have they 'revealed' it to scientific peer review? Or is all the evidence they have anecdotal stories and specious photographs? If their revelations are so factual, why would I have to go rummaging around Google to find it? Shouldn't I be able to read about it in National Geographic or Scientific American? (Lenny6024, May 25, 2007 10:32AM)

Lenny, we travel in space on a regular basis. Remember NASA? So, if interstellar space travel is possible for us, why would it not be possible for another culture (yes, aliens). We have traveled to many other planets, yes, they have all been void of life. But, do you think for a minute that if we found a planet that had life we wouldn't be all over it? So, why is it so hard to believe that there could be another life form (or people just like us) living somewhere other than earth. Why would the Lord create such a vast universe just to use such a small section of it? Im not saying there are aliens, but I certainly wont say there isn't!!! Now, one more rather important comment: Why attack those who believe in UFO's? Remember what it stands for "Unidentified Flying Object." That is exactly what these objects people see are. Like the phoenix lights, which I have seen more than once, explain it to me (proof positive) and it will no longer be a UFO. Quit spending so much good time of your life demeaning others for what they believe in and just move on with your life. No one is forcing the subject or the belief of the subject on you. (Shelly1265, May 25, 2007 10:27AM)

Lenny - Open your mind a little & check out what the French Government has reviled.

There are other Governments then the United States Government ya know.
(Ben (LEDZEPLIN), May 25, 2007 10:09AM)

c'mon Lenny, tell us how ya really feel.(michelle402, May 25, 2007 10:00AM)

Somebody explain to me how Earth not being the only planet with intelligent life (so-called) AUTOMATICALLY means extra-terrestrial spacecraft are flying around in our atmosphere? Here's another question for you: How is it that a Government that can't get along with itself (Democrats and Republicans) and couldn't even keep one BJ a secret could sit on the biggest scientific discovery ever for over sixty years? And why, Oh True Believers, have your little alien buddies never, not once, just dropped in on the U.N. to say hello? Because it is much more fun to believe that your evil government is keeping vast, dark secrets from you, and that all that the 'intelligent' beings from other worlds want to do is sneak around at night and kidnap sleeping earthlings and perform weird sexual experiments on them. That's why. And that is why, no matter what you are told or shown or whatever evidence is presented to the contrary, you will always believe in UFO's. Get a grip on yourselves. If you had even the slightest idea of the physics involved with interstellar space travel, you would not for one minute think that aliens are flying around in our skies. Of course, if you had that much on the ball, this article would never have been written.(Lenny6024, May 25, 2007 09:54AM)

Kathie, is your family close to area 51?(cindy5739, May 25, 2007 09:50AM)

This is so weird. A long time ago (about 40 years ago) my grandmother, a Native American did not speak a word of English. She also never watched TV or was unaware of it. Television only recently started showing up on the reservation recently because of Direct TV. Also, at that time the reservation did not have running water or electricity. She still road her horse to the trading post and hauled water in a wagon from a nearby well. The only modern technology in her Hogan was her radio. My grandmother stated that she saw a bright object sit down about 200 yards from her Hogan. A couple of little people, unlike humans (people with five fingers) came out and was pulling various plants out of the ground. She stood there and just watched them. She thought she was dreaming, the next day she said they were working on her in this bright room, looking over her entire body. She believes they took her into this object and was operating on her. Now this is a woman that never knew anything about modern technology. That was when I started believing in UFO’s.

Then again, one day I visited my aunt and uncle. We were sitting outside their Hogan, the moon was full and the fire was burning to keep us warm. My aunt and uncle told me that the night before, they had seen a large black plane and explained how it would take off and land. They also drew the plane shape in the ground, giving me details of the object. Years later, I found that what they saw was the Stealth. They seen the plane before anyone else did. Apparently, the US only flies their new projects on the vast reservation, because the Native Americans tend to keep to themselves.

So is it really UFO's or is it the Government?
(Kathie5293, May 25, 2007 09:18AM)

It’s time out government comes clean with their knowledge of UFO’s.

* The Canadian Defense Minister said last year that he himself has seen a UFO in person.

* France declassified all of their UFO information this year. They have documented sonar tracking of a craft traveling at speeds that are way beyond anything we are capable of.

* If that’s not proof enough just do a little research on the incident Roswell New Mexico. The local newspaper printed on the front page of their newspaper “We have recovered a crashed UFO and Alien Bodies” – Then 2 days later it’s a weather balloon??? The farmer who first discovered the crash site, on his death bed told his entire family what he found that day, and how he kept quiet about it because Government Officials threatened him and his family if he were to tell anyone.

* When the script for “Independence Day” (the movie) went to the FCC for approval. The Government made them take out every single reference to Area 51 in the movie. Then later allowed it, (in my opinion) to make a mockery of the idea that the Government is actually hiding advanced technology there.

What makes you think that our Government is telling you the truth? It's up to you to question authority and think for yourself.
